wales is ideal for walking such as the precipice walk near dolgellau

Meirionydd, the southern third of Gwynedd, is fabulous for walking as it offers all degrees of difficulty from level strolls to energetic scrambles. The famous Panorama, Precipice (left) and Torrent walks are all within half an hour’s drive of Einion House. We are even closer to the start of one of the challenging routes up the mighty Cadir Idris. For several walks you don’t need to drive at all. The Blue Lake, the Mawddach trail, Friog/Fairbourne seafront and the footpath on the railway bridge to Barmouth are all right on our doorstep.

Wales is most famous for its steam trains and its castles and there are plenty of examples of both within easy reach of Einion House. Our local narrow gauge train runs from Fairbourne to Penrhyn Point, where you can then catch the ferry to Barmouth (right). The Bala Lake Railway, Talyllyn Railway and Ffestiniog Railway are also within easy reach. As for castles, the choice seems endless - Harlech Castle, Criccieth Castle and Caernarfon Castle are all well preserved whilst Castell y Bere is an atmospheric ruin at the end of a short woodland walk.

" We loved to be here. Beautiful landscape. We will try to come back in summer to see if it is as beautiful as in winter. "

looking from the mountains of Snowdonia to the estuary which is ideal for birdwatching

The varied landscape in Snowdonia around Friog makes the area a paradise for bird watchers. Mountains, woods, salt marshes, sand dunes, the tidal estuary and riverbanks provide such varied habitats that around 60 different species can be seen within a few minutes walk of Einion House. Special mention must be made of the frequently seen Peregrine falcons and buzzards that nest in the mountains just across the road.

There are 7 RSPB sanctuaries within easy reach of Friog - the closest being on the Mawddach estuary at Penmaenpool, only 7 miles away. Armchair bird watchers don’t even have to travel that far though as the feeders in the garden attract regular and varied feathered visitors.
